According to the Editorial Freelancer Association, ghostwriters and journalists earn between $40 and $60 USD per hour, or between 26 to 50 cents a word. This makes it challenging for brand marketers to get predictable pricing for budgeting. If you pay by the word, you are incentivized to keep it short.
You sacrifice word quality to limit word quantity.
Our monthly model gives you price predictability so you can easily budget for your content. In the table below, we compare what it costs to work with quality freelancers to Ghost Works.
Per article cost in USD ranges from $100 for a 500 word article (low-quality) to $1,500 for a 1,500 word article (high quality).
This price does not factor in your own time in finding, vetting, and managing freelancers!
Per article cost in USD starts at $450, with word counts up to 1,200 words per article. Price is lower for higher volumes.
Given our streamlined process, efficient workflow, and deep domain expertise, we come in as the smart choice for brand marketers who don’t want to sacrifice quality just to stay in budget.
These are article-only plans. Please let us know if you’d like to include custom graphics, branded research, whitepapers, case studies, webinars, or social media management.
Looking for more articles each month? We can create a custom plan based on your needs. This plan is ideal for blending executive thought leadership efforts on LinkedIn, Medium and PR placements with your company blog.
Need a whitepaper, case study, custom content strategy, or other content/communications work? We’ve got that. Email Nick for a custom quote.
1-3 three business days after sign up
To get started, we will reach out to schedule our initial consultation within one business day. Once this is scheduled, we will send over a comprehensive question set that takes about 30 minutes to answer. This ensures that our on-boarding session is productive.
5-7 business days after sign up
Once we have a handle on your needs, objectives, and current process, we will match you with your brand journalist. Then the fun begins! We will begin to collaborate and aim to have the first article ready for review within 10-12 business days.
10-12 business days after sign up
Instead of an on-boarding fee, we take the first two weeks to align on your company goals, brand voice, and content objectives. So while there won't be a credit for those 2 weeks of articles, this time is essential to our success. This structure also allows us to avoid those shady set-up fees!
There’s never enough time to create content that delivers the results you want.
Our focus is content that converts: converts attention into readers, readers into leads, and leads into brand advocates.
Your blog should be the source of affordable, qualified leads… that’s what we make that happen every week!
Prices are going up across the corporate content market. So we are helping brands of all sizes compete in a price-inflated environment. Per Hubspot:
Prices are actually going up in the corporate content market. That’s partly because so many companies are piling into the space that the only way to stand out is to create exceptional material, and that costs more.
Rates for freelancers range between 10 cents a word to a dollar a word. And you generally get what you pay for! You’ll notice the difference in engagement between thoughtful, intelligent pieces, and shoddy quickly-written click bait. Consumers of brand content are far more sophisticated these days…that old-school clickbait doesn’t work as much as it used to. Quality content wins today. We don’t want to short-change your readers, and so we don’t short-change our brand journalists.
There are several content marketing software companies out there that charge at least one thousand USD a month — before writing expenses and the time you invest in finding, vetting, and managing freelancers. Rather than on-boarding a new writer, you always have someone who knows your brand and your brand’s trajectory. We return time to your day so you can focus on the other pressing priorities that move your business forward.
We believe that we are priced right and that you’ll be happy with the quality, breadth, and speed of our work. If not, we offer guaranteed refund of any pro-rated month.
Glad that you see the value in our service! We believe that we have priced our product correctly, and that we offer a great value for the money. One way we do this is through offering our brand journalists regular work. It’s hard to be a freelancer: Inconsistent work, chasing down payments, and finding new clients are all pressing issues. We alleviate many of those for freelancers at work with us. This means that we also spend less time finding, vetting, and managing our brand journalists. We pass these savings on to you!
We also spend little to no money unpaid marketing. Word-of- mouth brings us the lion’s share of our business, alongside our blog. We practice what we preach! Since we have fewer marketing costs related to finding and retaining new clients, as well as finding and retaining new freelancers, we can price competitively and still make a sustainable profit.
We’re a boutique operation that provides high-touch service for our brand journalists and our clients. We are so confident in our work that we will offer a refund of any pro-rated time left on your blog management service.
Never! Please just email us and we will cancel your ghost writing service within one business day. Please note that all work will stop when you cancel! So if you have pending articles, please consider how you’d like to proceed before cancelling and losing any work in progress. We will issue a refund of the remaining days in the current month to the card on file. This can take several business days or longer due to credit card company delays.
As we plan resources according to our client commitments, we can offer full refunds for any remaining quarters on your plan (so in 3 month increments). So please try us out for a few months and see how it goes first. Once you realize how amazing we are, then go ahead and enjoy the annual prepaid savings! 😃
We struggled with this. While we wanted to offer a trial, we really couldn’t come up with a way to do this and not risk putting in a bunch of work up front for free.
The first couple of weeks is front-loaded with work on understanding your brand voice, content strategy, and editorial calendar planning. So we can’t really offer a trial.
However, you can cancel anytime. Please just email us and we will cancel your ghost writing service within one business day. Note that all work will stop when you cancel! So if you have pending articles, please consider how you’d like to proceed before cancelling and losing any work in progress.
We will issue a refund of the remaining days in the current month to the card on file. This can take several business days or longer due to credit card company delays.
For annual members, we plan resources according to our client commitments. So we can offer full refunds for any remaining quarters on your plan (so in 3 month increments). Absolutely! In recognition of your commitment to Ghost Works, all annual plan members receive a complimentary month, or about 10% off.
Annual members are also able to engage the Ghosts Works team on longer-term content projects outside of creating articles for owned media channels, such as branded blogs. When you buy a year, you’re buying a team member. We see ourselves as contributors, and want to work and collaborate towards our mutual success.
We love working with annual partners, as we can align content across a longer stretch, and collaborate for success.
We love startups! Yes, for those companies that do less than $1 million a year in revenue, we offer 10% off the listed price. We ask you to requalify your revenue each year.
Content strategy is a critical piece of any brand journalism approach. We toyed with different ways of making content strategy part of our core offering, as we need to have a strategy to execute. We need to be sure that we have the correct strategy blueprint in place before we go ahead.
While strategizing is a part of the everyday interactions as we plan the content calendar, there is upfront work to either create a new content strategy or two on boarding understand an existing one. That’s why we use the first two weeks of any engagement to cover all consulting related to content strategy and creating the content calendar for the months ahead.
Any additional consulting is charged at $100 dollars an hour. We take additional consulting projects on a case-by-case basis, as we want to spend our time creating content that converts and not working on a proposal basis.
For annual plan members, any additional consulting is charged at $125 dollars an hour. We take additional consulting projects on a case-by-case basis, as we want to spend our time creating content that converts and not working on a proposal basis. The proposal process ends up costing both sides a lot of money and time investment!
Articles do not roll over from month-to-month. Our model is built around quality content delivered on a consistent basis. We also built our business model to be as affordable as possible. One-off articles go for $750, so the only way we can offer such competitive pricing on a monthly basis with a “cancel anytime” guarantee is to not run a deficit.
If you think you’ll need more than one article a week, but fewer than two articles, please go for the Ghost Two plan. This ensures that we have enough credits in any given month to cover. It’s still a smart investment in your brand’s owned media strategy.
Don’t worry about running out of ideas for your blog — that’s where we come in! We provide a “content pool” of ideas so you don’t have to come up with articles each week. No more searching for things to write about! We keep your blog relevant, and balanced across company-specific and industry-specific topics.
Absolutely! Just as long as payment is received before the start of each 30-month period. We keep our costs low by keeping a lid on overhead — like having an accounts receivable team! We take payments in advance to reduce the cost of chasing payment. And we will stop working if payment has not been received at the start of any given 30-day period. We have to be strict about this, as it allows us to focus our energy on creating the best content possible for our clients.
All invoices are processed through Stripe, where you can add ACH as your preferred method of payment.
We are happy to do whatever we can to get Ghost Works approved through your company’s workflow. Email hi@ghost.works (or your brand journalist if you already have one) for more. For those who pay via credit card,We can send the invoice right away through Stripe.
We don’t have a separate plan, but our process aligns perfectly with a professional wanting to have their own thought-leadership style blog. We simply deploy our process in service of your personal brand, rather than a company’s.
Our plans are monthly, meaning that you get a set number of articles each month. With 52 weeks over 12 months, there will be 4 non-publishing weeks. Those weeks are oriented around U.S. holidays, where we are based: the week before Memorial Day, the week before Labor Day, the week of Thanksgiving, and the week of Christmas.
Put another way: You’re not paying for articles on those weeks already, as part of our monthly pricing. So there are no credits or refunds during those weeks.
Brand journalism isn’t just content marketing. It’s a commitment to editorial content with journalistic integrity from your brand’s unique perspective. This isn’t just about content showcases your brand. It’s really about how your brand is different than the rest. In a world were many products are commoditized, it really comes down to the people behind the business.
Customers want to feel something and I want to feel a connection to the brand. This is most easily accomplished through telling the story from and around the brand’s perspective: its people, its clients, its community, and the trends that impact a brand’s many stakeholders. We also use industry-leading insights to give your brand the halo effect of being a smart brand. People want to do business with people, and your brand’s content should highlight your industry-leading insights. We do this through not just content about your brand but also with content that might be found on an industry trade magazine website.
As far as we know, we are the world’s only boutique content agency focused on brand journalism. We ask our writers to treat your brand like any media outlet that they have worked for in their careers. Our writers have a passion for business, and a passion for content marketing, a combination that does not always exist in the content creation universe. We will steer content towards a tone that balances your brand voice and the interests of the reader. Overly corporate content never works — we want to balance your desire to promote your brand’s products and services with the imperative to create interesting stories.
For the purposes of definition, an article is a piece of content of varying lengths (generally between 500 and 1,500 words) that is published on a blog, online media outlet, or in print. This means that we can (and will!) ghost write an article by an executive for your blog, or use one of your article credits to write an article that might be published on a 3rd party channel that isn’t your company’s blog.
Here’s our “Three Types of Articles:”
As a blog management service, articles are what we do. Articles are also at the center of what’s known as ‘content atomization.’ The idea is to write one piece of content and use it multiple ways. For example an article series of six articles could be converted into white paper to use as the sales enablement download.
While we don’t make white papers off-the-shelf, for our annual partners, we may work on an hourly basis to create different types of content based on the articles we’ve created for your brand’s blog. The annual engagement allows us to deploy our long-term editorial strategy into other content creation areas.

Yes! All content we create is work for hire and 100% owned by the client.
Each Ghost is vetted for the appropriate skills and editorial acumen. We then focus on domain expertise to find the Ghost that consistently matches your brand voice, tone, and positioning. We want the Ghost to be just as passionate about your brand as you are, while also acting as the voice of the reader to make your blog’s content better and more impactful.
Yep, that’s the idea! While there are some exceptions to this (journalists need vacations too!), we can generally work out any gaps in advance. We’re not generally doing breaking news, so our brand journalism process allows us to pan effectively and schedule ahead for any gaps.
This is something that is discussed directly with the brand journalist. Some of our Ghosts continue to write publicly for outlets under their own names, and may not be comfortable using their byline for company blogs. This is important, as it ensures credibility and authenticity for those writers.
We also understand the value of this credibility and authenticity to brands. So we encourage all our Ghosts to publish under their bylines wherever feasible.
Generally, there will be a mix for any given company blog: some executive bylines, some staff bylines, some generic ‘news team’ bylines, and some brand journalist bylines. We will discuss all of these during on-boarding.
That’s a bit of our secret sauce! If you’re a journalist interested in joining our congress of ghosts, please email newghosts@ghost.works.

Please see the section above about what happens once payment has been received.
The on-boarding process is definitely heavier up front. It takes a lot of effort and collaboration to align expertly with your brand voice, company objectives and content goals. Please be sure to allow enough time at the start of our engagement to get us going. Once momentum is established, there will be two calls a month to align on shifting objectives and new campaigns.
We’re glad that you love them! We certainly love them too, and that’s why we don’t get in the way if you find someone that would be a fit for your team. That’s between you and your Ghost!
However, we do strive to offer the flexibility and support that only a journalist-owned company can. So we do strive to make it a tough choice for a Ghost to leave! 😀
In the course of providing our service, we know that we are likely to learn about internal company matters. Each of our brand journalists signs an NDA with us, and we sign an NDA with each client. We are also ok if you’d like a direct NDA with the brand journalist.
This is never gotcha journalism. We are here to serve the brand’s story and to uncover the most interesting angles for your community of internal and external stakeholders. Our process is always a collaboration with our clients, and trust is the backbone of all collaborations. So we protect all confidential information, and strive to bring out only the most relevant angles that achieve your company’s content goals.
Our expertise is centered around those who serve B2B audiences. However, we also have plenty of background in writing for consumers. After all, people buy products/services from people not businesses! Regardless of whether you are B2B or B2C, we humanize your brand to make prospects eager to do business with you — and to make existing stakeholders proud of their relationship with your brand.
Absolutely! Travel expenses are not covered by the monthly fee, so keep that in mind.
Going to a company event or conference can provide enough content for up to six months on a company blog. It’s a fantastic investment that makes for better blog content — and a more knowledgeable brand journalist.
